Derived from the Gaulish alauda, meaning “great singer” ("Alouette", 2023), the word “alouette” is French for “lark.” You may have heard the famous folkloric song about it! The lark has impressive vocal capabilities, modulating its rich song depending on the context at hand (Alouette, passereau au chant puissant et mélodieux).This songbird evokes both our remote European history and local Quebec folklore, symbolizing the transition from one world or culture to the next—a cross-cultural migration similar to the translation process. The lark’s fluid flight pattern also symbolizes the elegant use of language. Its wings allow it to discover new horizons, as we do when working on a text. Choosing an animal for our name also speaks to our wish to grow in a respectful, rich and organic ecosystem. Our project is part of a broader, more inclusive movement that’s aligned with an ever-changing society.

Before joining L’Alouette, Annie built strategic partnerships with research communities to boost the international outreach of studies conducted in Quebec. This background allowed her to become immersed in the niche language of economics, geomatics, remote sensing of the environment, social sciences and neurodiversity. Her countless collaborations with a dozen research labs in four universities, as well as private sector partners, gave her the chance to develop specialized literacy and versatility in a number of fields. As a strong proponent of inclusive writing and the singular “they,” Annie can adapt to changes in usage and follow industry-specific standards.

Ever since he was a young child, François was fascinated by words and language. He also demonstrated a keen sense for normative structure recognition and analysis early on, which led him to study law and obtain a Bachelor of Laws (LL. B.) in 2013. He went on to earn a graduate-level Diploma of Notarial Law (D.D.N.) in 2014. While interning in notarial law the following year, he discovered a passion for legal translation—a profession at the crossroads of words and standards, even more so than law itself. François is not the type to do things halfway, so he returned to school and earned his Bachelor in Professional Translation (B.A.) in 2018. Since then, he has been constantly honing his art as a legal translator, editor and writer. He became a certified member of the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ) and the Canadian Association of Legal Translators in 2021.

Ever since she began her studies in health and psychosocial intervention, during which she also organized and facilitated francization workshops for a community organization, Marie-Pier has had a strong interest in all things life sciences. She discovered translation by chance along the way, which gave her the perfect opportunity to continue exploring the vast field of life sciences. After earning her bachelor’s degree in translation, she worked with a Quebec firm’s medical translation team for three years and later transitioned to freelance work—always with a focus on the health and psychosocial field. Through her experience as a freelancer, she discovered many aspects of business management, including accounting and client relations. Not only does Marie-Pier enjoy crunching numbers, managing Excel spreadsheets and solving complex formulas, she also keeps our cooperative firmly rooted by providing clear guidance on the intricate administrative processes required to run our business.
